A new tool for identification of adult Dacini fruit flies
ITP is pleased to announce the release of Adult Bactrocera fruit fly ID, a new tool that makes identification of adult fruit flies of the economically important genus Bactrocera accessible beyond a handful of global taxonomic experts. The tool covers Bactrocera and closely allied genera Zeugodacus, Dacus, and Monacrostichus (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae: Dacini). Over 800 species are included, which covers the world except species native to the African continent, giving it the largest geographic coverage of any Bactrocera identification key currently available. This tool further provides detailed descriptions of all Dacini species regarded as economically important.
The user-friendly matrix-based Lucid key includes detailed color illustrations and photos for a large number of species enabling anyone with basic entomological training to accurately identify adult Dacini flies to species-level or a small set of candidate species, based on morphological characters and male lure attraction.
In addition to the key, this tool includes:
- A filterable image gallery
- Illustrated fact sheets with extensive diagnoses
- Information about Dacini
- A list of helpful and related online resources
Adult Bactrocera fruit fly ID joins ITP’s collection of over 50 identification tool websites.
